Angels with Paws Founder Passes
The family of Angels with Paws sadly announces the passing of founder Jean Ausenbaugh on June 9. She was the board president and primary donor of Angels with Paws Rescue, a non-profit operating in Lakewood.
Jean was born in Colorado on June 11, 1939. She grew up in Denver with her parents and brother, Wendell. She graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder and went to work with the Army, Department of Special Services. Later, she joined the American Red Cross and served in places like Vietnam, Korea, Guam, Germany and San Francisco (where she was stationed at the famous Presidio overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge.) She became the first female Field Director at Fort Carson, CO, and was sent all over the Western District of the Red Cross to teach classes as a National Instructor.
In September 2003, Jean and a few other volunteers formed the charity, Angels with Paws. Jean purchased and renovated a former restaurant on Youngfield Street in Lakewood and opened the shelter in early 2004. Through her leadership and funding, Angels with Paws positively impacted over 11,000 cats and kittens (and some older, shy dogs too!). They have rescued, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, provided medical care, and a safe place to live until forever homes could be found. With such a huge heart, Jean devoted all of her time and resources to keeping the shelter open to rescue animals in need and went out of her way to make sure there was room and care for those with special needs, medical needs, shy cats and older cats.
In lieu of flowers, Jean’s family asks that donations be made to Angels with Paws.
